WHAT IS ARM LIFT SURGERY (BRACHIOPLASTY)?

Arm lift surgery may not be an option for patients with a significant excess of arm skin. These patients may feel that they have “wings” that hang down from their arms and who don’t wear dresses and short sleeved shirts because they are very feel very self conscious about this. This is very common in patients who have undergone a massive weight loss. In these patients, an arm lift is the preferred contouring procedure.

HOW IS ARM LIFT SURGERY (BRACHIOPLASTY) PERFORMED?

Arm lift surgery is performed under general anesthesia. The procedure involves removing the redundant skin using either a linear incision along the inside of the arm that may be combined with an incision in the armpit.

WHAT IS THE RECOVERY PERIOD?

The recovery period varies with each patient and the type of procedure performed; however, the majority of patients are able to resume most normal activities within one week after surgery. The decision on when to return to work and normal activities depends on how fast you heal and how you feel. After surgery, pain is relieved with medication. Arm lift scars will undergo a period of maturation that typically lasts a year or more.

WHERE IS ARM LIFT SURGERY (BRACHIOPLASTY) DONE?

Arm lift surgery is well suited to our American Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) accredited outpatient SurgiCenter. Our facility is very private and is less expensive than hospital or public surgery centers. In some patients with more extensive surgical needs, the procedure will be performed in the hospital. Patients who have the procedure performed in the SurgiCenter are able to go home without undue difficulty after the procedure. Patients are required to rest quietly for a day after the surgery, but this can be carried out in the comfort of your home.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS?

Thousands of arm lift surgeries are successfully performed each year. Nevertheless, you should be aware of the potential hazards of surgery and specific risks associated with arm lift surgery. Postoperative complications such as delayed healing, damage to regional organs, infection, or localized collections of blood are uncommon. Other problems associated with arm lift surgery include asymmetry, rippling or dimpling of the skin, fluid collections under the skin, poor scarring, and that the operated area is frequently numb for some time after the surgery. Smokers should be aware that smoking is not allowed for four weeks prior to and four weeks after surgery. Complications arise more frequently when a patient continues to smoke. Risk of complications can be minimized by closely following Dr. McKane’s advice on follow-up care during the healing process.
