Breast Augmentation Surgery :
WHAT IS BREAST AUGMENTATION?
Breast augmentation is typically performed to enlarge small, underdeveloped breasts or breasts that have decreased in size, or atrophied, after childbearing. It may also be done to balance asymmetry that occurs naturally. More safe saline implants available today together with the ability to hide the incision, leaving hardly any visible scars have made breast augmentation the most popular cosmetic procedure performed today.

WHAT SIZE OR SHAPE OF BREAST?
Breast implants come in many sizes and shapes which are offered in low, moderate, high profile contours and smooth or textured surfaces. This variety enables Dr. Viera and you to choose an implant that will be most compatible with your anatomy and expectations. A moderate profile is the most popular implant because it provides a contour that most closely resembles a natural breast. The high profile implant is shaped to give more projection, but sacrifices some softness to hold its profile. It is often used when a woman with small breasts wants to greatly increase her bust size. We are now using the Mentor saline implant, it is softer, etc. It is softer and feels more natural. The implant is also pre filled and therefore does not have a valve, thus reducing the incidence of leakage experienced by other implants.

WHAT IS THE RECOVERY PERIOD?
The recovery period varies with each patient however the majority of patients are able to resume most normal activities within one week of surgery. The decision on when to return to work and normal activities depends on how fast you heal and how you feel. After surgery, pain is minimal and is easily controlled by medication. Sutures will usually be removed 2 - 3 weeks after surgery.
Breasts will appear "higher" than normal on the chest for the first 6 to 8 weeks after surgery. The breast implant will gradually settle and the breast will regain a normal very natural shape.

WHERE IS THE BREAST AUGMENTATION SURGERY DONE?
Breast augmentation surgery is well suited to our office Outpatient Surgical Facility. Patients are able to go home without undue difficulty after the procedure. The operation is carried out under general anesthesia. Patients are required to rest quietly for a day or so after the surgery but this can easily be carried out at home. Following surgery, a gauze dressing may be applied over the breasts and the patient is fitted with a "jog" or sports bra.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS?
Thousands of breast augmentations are performed successfully each year. Nevertheless, you should be aware of the potential risks of surgery and complications. Some of the possible complications associated with breast argumentation include bleeding, infection, shifting of the implants, asymmetry, numbness, leaking, and excess scar formation called capsular contracture. These are infrequent and we exercise great care in attempting to prevent these complications from occurring.
