A brow lift is an operation that involves elevating and redraping the forehead skin to elevate all or a portion of the brow. The operation will lift the drooping brow skin and give a refreshed appearance to the eye region of the face. The operation can be designed to correct problems with forehead and glabellar wrinkles and lines.
As individuals age, there is a change in the skin just as there changes in all other parts of the body. Fatty tissue tends to decrease in volume and in density causing the skin to fit more loosely. There are also changes in the bones of the face which combined with changes in muscular action and gravity lead to more prominent skin folds, drooping brows, and wrinkles. Brow lift surgery is designed to correct these conditions. Basically, the operation involves lifting and removing the excess skin and suspending the brow in a lifted position. This gives the upper face and eyes a more refreshed and rested appearance.
Brow lift surgery is performed under general anesthesia or I.V. sedation. You will sleep through the entire operation. Incisions are placed within the hairline and individualized to fit the patient’s needs. Cosmetic Surgery Associates performs short scar brow lifts whenever possible and these incisions provide access to the excess forehead skin and wrinkles. Working through these incisions, the forehead wrinkles can be addressed and the brow elevated into a more youthful position. The excess skin gently re-draped and trimmed. The scar is usually inconspicuous and hidden within the hair. Depending on the extent of the surgery, the procedure usually lasts less than an hour.
The operation causes the patient very little discomfort. When done alone, patients can return to near normal activity within a week of the operation. After surgery, there is some pain that is easily controlled by medication. You will be asked to keep your head slightly elevated for a few days. Swelling and skin discoloration are common and usually subside within a week or two.
Although you may be up and about the day of surgery, Dr. Viera and Dr. McKane will advise you on the proper schedule for resuming your normal routine. To permit proper healing, activities which raise blood pressure such as jogging, swimming, or bending should be restricted during the first few weeks. The decision to return to work depends on the individual’s degree of swelling and discomfort.
Brow lift surgery is well suited to our American Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) accredited outpatient SurgiCenter. This facility is very private and is less expensive than hospital or public surgery centers. Patients are able to go home without undue difficulty after the procedure. Patients are required to rest quietly for a day after the surgery, but this can be carried out in the comfort of your home.
Thousands of brow lift surgeries are successfully performed each year. Nevertheless, you should be aware of the potential hazards of surgery and specific risks associated with brow lift surgery. Postoperative complications such as delayed healing, nerve damage, infection, or localized collections of blood are uncommon. Smokers should be aware that smoking is strongly discouraged for 2 weeks before and after the surgery. Complications arise more frequently when a patient continues to smoke. Risk of complications can be minimized by closely following Dr. Viera and Dr. McKane’s advice on follow-up care during the healing process.
