Ear pin back surgery is a procedure designed to reduce the prominence of the ears. Patients who have prominent ears have often suffered quietly in childhood due to the jeers of other children. It is not uncommon for us to hear that a child was called "Dumbo" by his or her peers. Unfortunately, the psychological damage from these cruel names can be very long lasting, and many patients with prominent ears remain very self-conscious about their ears into adulthood. In this procedure, the ears are set back into a position that makes them appear more normal. This can be a very liberating procedure and many of our patients adjust their hairstyle or pierce their ears once they have had it performed to show off their ears.
Ear pin back surgery is performed under local and IV sedation for more mature patients, however, general anesthesia is available for younger patients or for patients who would prefer it. The procedure involves making an incision behind the ear to provide access to the ear cartilages. The ear cartilages can be incised, weakened, and sutured to shape them into a normal position. The incision heals very well and is not visible except with close inspection behind the ear.
After surgery, there is some slight soreness and discomfort, which can easily relieved with medication. You will be asked to keep your head elevated. Following the operation, the ears undergo some mild swelling, but this subsides fairly rapidly. You will be asked to protect your ears using an athletic headband while you are sleeping and when engaged in sports activities. There is no visible scarring from the procedure. Although you will be up and about the day of surgery, Dr. Viera will advise you on the proper schedule for resuming your normal routine. To permit proper healing, you should avoid over activity and refrain from bending over for two weeks. The decision on when to return to work depends on how fast you heal and how you feel. If bruising is not of any concern, patients may return in two to four days.
Ear pin back surgery is well-suited to our Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) accredited outpatient SurgiCenter. This facility is very private and is less expensive than hospital or public surgery centers. Patients are able to go home without undue difficulty after the procedure. Patients are required to rest quietly for a day after the surgery, but this can be carried out in the comfort of your home.
Thousands of ear pin back surgeries are successfully performed each year. Nevertheless, you should be aware of the potential hazards of surgery and specific risks associated with ear surgery. Postoperative complications such as delayed healing, nerve damage, infection, or localized collections of blood are uncommon. Smokers should be aware that smoking is strongly discouraged for two weeks before and after the surgery. Complications arise more frequently when a patient continues to smoke. Risk of complications can be minimized by closely following Dr. Viera's advice on follow-up care during the healing process.
