Fat cells lie beneath the skin throughout the body, but accumulate in greater amounts in certain areas. - When we gain or lose weight, we are not adding or subtracting fat cells but rather changing the amount of fat within each cell. Therefore, many patients, in spite of the weight they lose, are left with bulges or fat deposits in undesirable places. Liposuction surgery is a technique that uses a high vacuum attached to special probes which are passed through tiny incisions made in inconspicuous places around the body. Fat cells are literally sucked out allowing the surgeon to shape or contour various parts of the body.
Our surgery is performed using the "all tumescent" ,and the "laser assisted" techniques. This involves the use of a low frequency laser applied externally to the areas targeted for liposuction. The laser causes the fat cells to break down, releasing their fat. This technique makes it easier to remove the fat using smaller cannulas which result in less trauma and virtually no loss of blood. The reduced trauma provides for less discomfort and a much earlier return to normal activities.
Liposuction surgery can be used nearly any place on the body. It has proven particularly effective in the neck, stomach, waist, hips and thighs. In addition, it can be used on the arms, buttocks, knees and ankles. For men, liposuction can be used very effectively to correct gynecomastia (enlarged breasts).
Liposuction surgery is suitable for both men and women. Age itself is not a determining factor although the patient must be in good general health.
Since the procedure removes fat only and does not remove overlying skin, it is important that the patient have satisfactory overlying skin tension.
The recovery period is very rapid. Special tape or dressings are used for several days after the procedure. Most of the sutures we use melt by themselves, making removal unnecessary. If needed, sutures will be removed approximately 7 days after surgery. An elastic garment is usually recommended in the area of treatment for several weeks after surgery to assist in the final shaping.
Liposuction surgery is well-suited to our accredited office Outpatient Surgical Facility. Patients are able to go home without undue difficulty after the procedure. The operation is carried out under general anesthesia or sedation. We have used the tumescent and ultrasound techniques for several years. This decreases bruising and discomfort and allows the safer removal of large amounts of fat. Patients are required to rest quietly for a day or so after the surgery but this can easily be carried out at home. No special care is required. Discomfort is usually quite moderate and can easily be controlled with oral medication.
Any surgical procedure carries certain risks, However, lipsouction has been performed in this country for over twenty years, and serious complications are very uncommon.
The primary limitation of the operation is that infrequently the operated area may not be completely smooth after the procedure. This light wrinkling or wavy appearance generally tends to diminish with time.
The operated area is frequently numb for some time after the surgery and on occasion there are collections of fluid which gradually absorb. Infection and bleeding are extremely rare.
