4 Tips on Taking Care of Breasts after Augmentation

Breast augmentation is the first step to more beautiful breasts. If you’re wondering what breast augmentation can do for you, learn more about this procedure. While recovery varies with each patient, breast implants gradually settle and breast regain their natural shape with six to eight weeks after surgery.*

I encourage my Houston patients to vigilant about maintaining their breasts after augmentation. Here are four things that can help keep your breasts looking beautiful for years to come.

Larger breasts need good support. Choose bras that support your breasts well and fit your new shape. Breast implants weigh one to two pounds each, depending on the size and whether they are saline or silicone. I advise my patients to select bras with straps with very little, if any elasticity, preferably none. This helps prevent sagging. I also recommend not to go bra-less if possible. Doing so just one day a week amounts to 56 days a year, during which time those implants are pulling down on the breasts. Many fashionable bras offer excellent support, so invest an hour or two in a women’s lingerie store to find what feels and works best for you. Good support not only keeps your breasts looking great—it reduces sagging discomfort so you’ll look fabulous in new clothes and feel great too.

Sports bras are a must. Whether your workouts include the gym, a morning walk, participating in sports or taking exercise classes, you need to wear a sports bra. Any type of physical activities can stress fragile breast tissue. Plus, the extra movement can strain upper back muscles and cause sagging. I tell my patients to create the habit of wearing sports bras for all physical activities. You may need to get used to them in the beginning because they can feel tight and confining, but you’ll soon appreciate the extra support and comfort.

Massage your breasts. A daily massage helps keep your implants feeling and moving like your natural breasts. An easy way to remember to do this is to make it part of your daily shower routine. Gently massage your breasts in all directions. It doesn’t have to be a long massage —just a quick daily massage will keep your implants moving after breast augmentation.

Schedule regular exams with your plastic surgeon. Breast augmentation patients are thrilled with their new look, which is the result I love to see. While complications are rare, regular exams can pinpoint any concerns. Keep your follow up appointments.
